We have a whole day to ourselves today. The kids are having canteen for lunch so we don't have to pick them up today. Normally there is no school on a Wednesday but this week Thursday is a public holiday so just for this week the kids are meant to go to school on Wednesday and have Thursday and Friday as holidays.
When a public holiday falls on a Thursday or Tuesday, it is common practice to "make the bridge" (faire le pont) by taking off the Friday or Monday so creating a very long weekend. When this happens businesses run on short staff or smaller family run businesses close for the full period.
We're actually going away tomorrow for a few days up north to Annecy and Besancon. We have been to both places before but it was so freezing cold it was hard to enjoy them properly. I'm looking forward to seeing both places now that it's warmer.
