Auxerre rates a mention in the Lonely Planet guide as “an alluring riverside town”. It was a river port in Roman times dating back to the 5th century. We couldn’t have picked a prettier place for our first stop. It’s a gorgeous town.
The kids were fascinated to find this huge snail on the side of the road. It must have been four inches long with the biggest shell I’ve ever seen. I don’t think the kids believe the French people cook and eat snails. We’ve since seen them in the shops in neat little trays stuffed with something green. Doesn’t appeal to me.
