We went for an afternoon drive to Le Village des Bories which had these funny little beehive shape huts. The village was just outside the gorgeous hilltop village of Gordes. The bories are built of drystone which is stone without mortar. It just looked like stacks of flat rocks but somehow, amazingly, they don’t fall down or collapse because of the way they’ve been put together. There’s hundreds of them around the Provence region but there’s a whole village of them near Gordes.
Gordes is built on top of a hill, like so many others, it looks like the houses are carved from the rock itself and very steep and imposing. I’d like to go there again and have a good walk around.
We drove back through Roussillon which is another pretty village. Here all the houses are made of this orangey-red stone. The colours are quite beautiful particularly in the late afternoon sun.
